More soundies: thefilmarchived.blogspot.com The Hut-Sut Song (a Swedish Serenade) is a novelty song from the 1940s with nonsense lyrics. The song was written in 1941 by Leo V. Killion, Ted McMichael and Jack Owens. The first and most popular recording was by Horace Heidt and His Musical Knights. The lyrics state that a Swedish boy skipped school to sit by a stream and sing what is purportedly a Swedish folk song. The chorus goes in part: Hut-Sut Rawlson on the rillerah and a brawla, brawla sooit. The song then purports to define some of the words, a boy and a girl by a river and their dreams. The song has an unusual and contagious rhythm. The song was also recorded by various artists such as Mel Torme, Freddy Martin and Spike Jones. The song is of the same genre as other novelty songs of the era, such as Mairzy Doats and Three Little Fishies (Itty Bitty Poo). Some contend that the song was a rewriting of an unpublished Missouri River song called Hot Shot Dawson. The popularity of the song is lampooned in a 1940s film short. In the film, the King’s Men (who also performed on Fibber McGee and Molly), play young men living in a boarding house who are endlessly singing the song while getting dressed, eating dinner, playing cards, etc., until the exasperated proprietor finally has them removed to an insane asylum. The song is featured in the movies From Here to Eternity, Ace in the Hole, A Christmas Story, and the 1942 version of Horton Hatches the Egg. Fibber McGee and Molly

From voaspecialenglish.com | http Jason Kenyon loves playing video games. But his parents think he spends too much time with the games. Jason disagrees. JASON KENYON: “Well, to say the least, they didn’t like it very much. They said, stop and focus on a real career.” Jason is one of a growing number of students seeking jobs in the video gaming and technology industry. He attends Montgomery College in the state of Maryland. JASON KENYON: “When I finish with my bachelor’s degree probably two or so years from now, I may be able to find work pretty easily compared to most other industries. So I think I’ll have a good future.” Deborah Solomon teaches at the college. Solomon says the federal government is spending millions of dollars on gaming technology to help find and train workers for different agencies. DEBORAH SOLOMON: “The future of video gaming is very bright because the game technology is bleeding into virtually every other industry — from military to homeland security to health care, biotechnology, advertising, even news.” For example, the United States Army developed video games to help young Americans explore careers in the Army. David Versaw is chief financial officer of WILL Interactive, a game development company. DAVID VERSAW: “It’s a great medium to reach people. People in academics are starting to understand the power of gaming. The current state of the economy has slowed things down a little bit here recently. But we are busier now than we ever have been

Cheerful Charlie Chester – Jiving At The Albert Hall/A Dreamers Holiday (1950) Charlie Chester (April 26, 1914 — June 26, 1997) was a British stand-up comedian and TV and radio presenter, broadcasting almost continuously from the 1940s to the 1990s. His style was similar to that of Max Miller. Chester was born Cecil Victor Manser in Eastbourne, East Sussex. His first job after leaving education was as a grocer’s errand boy, but he won talent competitions for his musical instrument playing and singing. Working as a travelling salesman for an embroidery company, Chester realised he had the gift of the gab and decided to become a professional comedian. Known as “Cheerful” Charlie Chester, he was well-known to British audiences in the 1940s from his BBC radio show Stand Easy. This show was adapted for television as The Charlie Chester Show in 1949 and became a standup and sketch show for the next 11 years. Frequent cast members included Edwina Carroll, Eric ‘Jeeves’ Grier, Len Lowe, Deryck Guyler, Len Marten, Arthur Haynes and Fred Ferrari. Chester’s radio shows included A Proper Charlie and That Man Chester. Another series — which started out as a section of The Charlie Chester Show in 1950 — was the quiz Pot Luck, which was the first British TV programme to offer prizes for correctly answering questions. He suffered a stroke and died on June 26, 1997.
