This was when Jay was still touring doing stand up comedy primarily, and quite honestly I think he was funnier then. I still think he’s OK but he just doesn’t have that same edge that he once did, then again everyone changes and gets older I suppose. Anyway, the audio was recorded from the AM Loop, WLUP in Chicago, during the late 80′, and is definitely one of the classic, hilarious Steve & Garry celebrity interviews.

The introduction of satellite radio has been one of the biggest innovations in recent FM broadcasting history. This radio signal can be heard at a distances of thirty five thousand kilometers and beyond. That is more that twenty two miles with a clear reception, no static and more than one hundred stations to listen to. The inception of this concept was 1992 when the Federal Communications Commissions gave up the S band on the radio wave spectrum (2.3 GHz) to Digital Audio Radio Service. The companies that were initially given a license to broadcast on this spectrum were XM Satellite Radio and Sirius Satellite Radio. Currently, there are three satellite radio services broadcasting around the world: XM and Sirius in North America and WorldSpace in Europe, Asia and Africa.

The three satellite radio companies each have a different system for broadcasting their signals. This means that a customer would end up buying specific equipment depending on what company they subscribe to. There are three parts to a satellite radio system: the ground repeaters, the satellites and the radio receivers. The XM satellite radio has satellites that are geographically located above the equator at all times. To combat the issue of obstacles such as hills, bridges and buildings, the XM radio service has a network of repeaters. These are antennas that get the signal from the satellites and transmit it to the subscriber’s radio. The Sirrus radio service is set up a little differently. The satellites are elliptical in structure and they orbit the Earth. Because these satellites are on a higher level, the signal is usually clear and there is no need to have quite as many repeaters.

The satellite radio programmers are able to choose what music or program to fill air time. Many use CD’s or have musicians come in to perform live. This sound is transmitted via a digital format. The signal is encoded by the satellite and then sent to the repeater antennae. The repeater moves it along to the subscriber’s radio which decodes the signal and plays the sound. Satellite radio also utilizes digital compression which is a method of reducing a set amount of information into a bandwidth using complex algorithms. The amount of people who subscribe to satellite radio has grown due to the improvements made to the technology. The appeal of the radio station has always been the fact that the radio doesn’t depend on advertising to pay the bills, therefore the programs available are commercial free.

College Radio on the Internet Offers More Advantages for Listeners

The future of radio is at stake. As we quickly move into the 21st Century, our consumers are changing their listening mediums and we must stay abreast of those listening needs and modes.

Traditional college radio broadcasts may be lost in translation if they cannot keep up with technological changes. Some radio broadcast owners are ignoring these trends, which may hurt their ratings if listeners increasingly move away from traditional college radio to college radio on the Internet. Still others perceive college radio on the Internet as a dead medium, however it can be revived if colleges continue to research listener audiences and trends.

Benefits of Having College Radio on the Internet

1. More formats are available than traditional FM college radio stations. Hundreds are available from jazz and blues to Broadway and opera, to Indie rock and adult alternative and many more.

2. Ability to listen while in multiple places such as home, work, college, library or wherever you have available broadband access.

3. With college radio on the Internet, there is no “dead air”. Some college and traditional radio stations have their last broadcast ending at midnight, and the next one starts between five and seven in the morning. However, utilizing college radio on the Internet and the growing demand from students and consumers, this has the potential to increase funding and the listening audience base.

4. Set and leave it on one station without having to remember station call letters or numbers. No longer do listeners have to remember where they heard their favorite tunes on the dial. 7. Allows more opportunities for unsigned bands and musical talent to be heard on the radio. There are many benefits to keeping college radio on the Internet. Although some college stations have abandoned this medium because it did not reap the rewards as quickly as was expected, now it has listeners’ ears and they have more invested interest with this medium.

The top online radio networks include Shoutcast, Radio@AOL, and MSN Music as reported by MeasureCast, a company which provides next day audience size and demographic reports for online media networks. Only the top college radio stations online have made the top 10 list, which include a few Ohio college radio station programs too.

The top college radio broadcasts include KALX, Berkeley, CA; WNYU, New York, NY; and KTRU, Houston, TX, which was reported by Radio-Locator.com. Furthermore, a notable Ohio college radio station has a list of eight college radio on the Internet stations that are broadcasted from various locations across the U.S., especially where a broadcasting school is located. Colleges and universities who have the ability and interest to support college radio on the Internet stations are able to employ its own students to undertake all tasks and responsibilities of running the online radio station. Student listeners create an instant audience base because their music interests vary and they are attracted by a variety of formats.

Because Internet based college radio stations can literally reach listeners from all corners of the world, we would think radio station owners would want to continue college radio on the Internet. Futhermore, college radio stations on the Internet, as well as traditional AM/FM formats, can run in tandem with one another without radio tower interference. However, many smaller universities and community colleges are not able to afford to keep such options on the Internet due to failing sponsorship, decreased student population, or fees required to both license music and the radio station.

Check with your local broadcasting school to find out if they continually accept students to become professional radio DJs. If you are interested in learning to become a radio DJ, video or audio producer, or in other radio and TV broadcast careers, then you will want a broadcasting school that is both credible and credentialed. Technology continues to grow and expand, so to keep up with the industry they should have the latest equipment for those wanting to learn how to become a radio DJ on a college radio station on the Internet and other radio broadcast careers.

The Toronto Raptors are wondering how they’re going to replace an All-Star big man who was the face of their franchise. The New York Knicks are curious how much better they’re going to be with one.Shut out in its attempt to lure one of the NBA’s free agent megastars, New York still feels like it emerged a winner by adding Amare Stoudemire, who makes his Knicks debut Wednesday night at the Air Canada Centre against a Raptors team that could be facing a long rebuilding process after the departure of Chris Bosh.LeBron James, Dwyane Wade and Bosh all turned down the chance to play in New York in order to unite in Miami, but that didn’t stop the Knicks (29-53) from making a sizable splash in free agency.

Stoudemire agreed to leave Phoenix for a five-year, 0 million deal in New York, instantly becoming the best player to wear a Knicks uniform in years.For a franchise that hasn’t made the postseason since 2004 and hasn’t won a playoff game since 2001, adding one of the NBA’s premier offensive big men has led to something that’s been hard to find at Madison Square Garden lately — optimism.”The fans are ready just as well as we are,” Stoudemire said. “Again, we’re working hard on the basketball court to really give them what they’re looking for.”Perhaps the biggest hook for Stoudemire — aside from a max contract — was the up-tempo system of Mike D’Antoni, who coached the five-time All-Star for four full seasons in Phoenix. Stoudemire averaged 23.6 points and 9.2 rebounds under D’Antoni from 2004-05 to 2007-08.

D’Antoni is counting on similar production for a team that renounced the rights to its two leading scorers — David Lee and Al Harrington — to free up salary cap space.Of course, after two seasons with 61 total wins since D’Antoni arrived, the Knicks were willing to do whatever it took for a chance to land a big name.”You never know if you went another way what would have happened or will we ever know,” D’Antoni said. “But we had to set ourselves up to try to get one or two or three of the big free agents last summer and we came away with a good one, so it wasn’t 100 percent but it worked out pretty good.

“It was a tough two years, that’s behind us now. And everything now will be to develop guys, keep good pieces and try to add to the team.”Many have speculated one of those pieces will eventually be Carmelo Anthony, the Brooklyn-born forward who apparently wants to be traded from Denver ahead of his pending free agency.For now, though, Stoudemire is left to lead a team that shouldn’t have any trouble getting up the floor. The Knicks dealt Lee to Golden State for athletic big man Anthony Randolph, and used part of the cap space they had left over to sign point guard Raymond Felton.

Felton will start in the backcourt, and Stoudemire will join sharpshooting Danilo Gallinari and Russian rookie Timofey Mozgov up front, but the other starter isn’t set in stone. Either Toney Douglas or rookie Landry Fields will start alongside Felton, with the versatile Wilson Chandler settling into the role of sixth man.Perhaps no franchise is in flux quite like Toronto (40-42), which failed to make the playoffs after going 8-14 down the stretch.That, of course, is the least of the Raptors’ problems. Bosh joined James and Wade in Miami, leaving Toronto with nothing but a large trade exception for its all-time leading scorer and rebounder.

Five days later, the Raptors shipped Hedo Turkoglu — whom they signed to a five-year, million deal in 2009 — to Phoenix in a deal that netted speedy guard Leandro Barbosa.Between Bosh and Turkoglu, that’s 35.3 points and 15.4 rebounds per game left to replace.”We are going to make sure we ride the hot hands, get everyone a lot of touches and recognize some nights it’s going to be one guy and another night it’s going to be a whole host of players,” coach Jay Triano told the Raptors’ official website.Perimeter-oriented big man Andrea Bargnani (17.2 points per game) is the leading returning scorer, while rookie forward Ed Davis will eventually be counted on to take Bosh’s place. Davis, however, is out for at least three more weeks after tearing the meniscus in his right knee in a pickup game Sept. 15.

In the meantime, it’ll be up to Amir Johnson and Reggie Evans to fill in at power forward, while Linas Kleiza could replace Turkoglu.That means the Raptors will be relying on plenty of scoring from a backcourt of Jarrett Jack, Barbosa, Jose Calderon and DeMar DeRozan.Jack and DeRozan are the likely starters, and DeRozan’s progress could be critical. He started 65 games as a rookie last season and averaged 8.6 points, but he’ll likely need to increase that for Toronto to compete.”I think he’s got a lot more experience being on the floor in crucial times,” Triano said. “I think that’s going to be something that benefits him not only this year but throughout his career.”DeRozan averaged 17.7 points against the Knicks last season, playing in three of the four wins in Toronto’s season sweep. He had a career-high 24 in a 131-113 victory April 14.
